The quote by Dewey encapsulates why I consider the average, modern American a slave. The majority of them have so much debt, work more hours than the average feudal peasant, and have less understanding, interaction, and control of the world around them.

But, point this out to them and they don't understand, and get angry at the use of the word slavery. It'd be amusing if it wasn't so scary how tight and strong the invisible chains really are.

Understood, but that doesn't get at the fact that they're developing a habit in their soul of actual slavery that goes beyond just their time at work. The term short circuits their thinking, and they don't see how it affects the rest of their life.

Slightly. I have some minimal student debt I haven't gotten to but none other. Self employed in the trades - which Aristotle would call 'slightly better than slaves' as we're still beholden to clients wishes. However, I have a... budding homestead, so that helps one be less beholden.
